Sometimes you do everything you can, and it still isn’t enough.
Two men had to watch an elderly woman drown in her car after they tried everything they could to save her.
A 70-year-old woman was said to have driven her silver Perodua Kenari off a ramp near the Satok Suspension Bridge in Sarawak. The incident occurred on Wednesday around 10.30am. The car sank 15m deep into the river. Two men were present at the scene in their boat. According to them, they were there to clean the river. When they saw the sinking car, they rushed over and tried to save the driver.
“My partner and I tried to open the car door to rescue the old woman, but all four doors were locked; we had no tools to break the window,” one of the men, who identified himself as Bonnie, said. “The old woman saw that we had failed and sent us a signal to stop saving her, but we did not give up.” Bonnie and his friend tried using a rope to pull the car out of the water instead. The rope broke and they could only watch as the car sank.
The state’s Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received a distress call about the incident around 10.30am on the 24th, but could not confirm the number of victims as the caller was unsure. The Padungan Fire Station deployed 14 firefighters and rescuers. The victim’s body was retrieved at 1pm after the car had been located.
The elderly woman had apparently lost contact with her family after going out that morning. They launched a missing person notice but it was too late. The older woman had already passed on. According to The Borneo Post, Kuching police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani assured that the police are investigating the matter.
We pray the victim’s family finds peace and we commend the two men for not giving up and doing what they could.
