Expert Alerts That Majority Of The Couples Will Be Infertile By 2045

Shanna Swan is a professor of environmental medicine and public health at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City. Taking declining sperm counts into consideration, she has warned that a large number of couples will have to utilize assisted reproduction by 2045.

A study published in 2017 states that in the last 40 years, the sperm count of humans has more than halved. Earlier also Swan had alerted that the rate of sperm count reduction may threaten the survival of humans. Her latest prediction states that in less than 25 years, most humans will have to resort to assisted reproduction methods such as IVF to get pregnant.

In an interview with The Guardian, Swan stated that the situation is quite serious. After following the curve from the 2017 sperm-decline meta-analysis, one can foresee that we will have a median sperm count of zero by 2045. Although this is a hypothesis, there’s no proof that it’s diminishing. She says that as a result of this, most couples will have to resort to assisted reproduction by 2045.

Swan believes that people should be much more worried about coming into contact with chemicals, especially phthalates, the chemicals that make plastic flexible. Phthalates are widely used in the food manufacturing and packaging process, and this can reduce the levels of testosterone. This is a very good example of how a person’s sub-fertility and reproductive issues are connected to the environment.

Swan states that although people identify the existence of a reproductive health crisis, they don’t understand its origins. Most people believe that these problems are caused by delayed childbearing, choice, or lifestyle and that they can’t be chemical. She says that although other factors too are clearly involved, chemicals play a major role.

You Can Protect Yourself From Chemicals By Simple Lifestyle Changes

You can minimize getting exposed to such harmful chemicals with a few simple lifestyle changes. For example, consuming unprocessed food as much as possible lessens exposure to plastic. Also, it’s important not to use anything coated, such as Teflon, when cooking. Microwaving in plastic is also very bad for the health.

When asked if it’s possible to turn the sperm tide, Swan says that she’s hopeful about it. She believes it’s doable because ingenuity and the resources to do it are available. However, people need to recognize the problem and have the will to make adjustments to their lifestyle.
