Godzilla vs. Kong: Who Would Really Win In A Fight?

The first time we saw the trailer for Warner Bros’ “Godzilla vs. Kong”, it was safe to say that we were utterly pumped. There’s just something about these classic kaiju fights that scratched that primal 10-year old part of our brains. The grandeur and scale of two giant monsters just battling it out on the world stage. Ever since 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island”, fans have been clamouring for this fight and now, we’re finally going to get it.

That being said, a lot of people in the comment section were quick to point out the presence Mecha-Godzilla in the recent trailer. And yes we acknowledge that the chances of Godzilla and Kong probably teaming up to take on an external enemy is high. Still, we have to know: If you strip away all the plot armour and magical MacGuffin devices, who would win? Kong or Godzilla? Well, we’re here to settle the score once and for all. So join us in the ring as we answer one of cinema’s most important questions.

Strength and Size

There’s been a ton of speculation as to the size of both Godzilla and Kong. With some saying that the former easily outclasses the giant ape in terms of size and weight. In spite of some compelling arguments, we must rely on the footage that we have seen on-screen and in the trailer. Based on the fight we saw between Godzilla and Kong on top of a large ship in the trailer, we clearly see that Kong and Godzilla are matched in terms of height at the very least. Even if one of them is of slightly higher stature, it isn’t much of an advantage. Arguably Godzilla probably weighs heavier than Kong due to his larger frame.

In terms of raw strength and power, we believe that if it was purely a fist-fight, Kong would take the crown. Have we seen Godzilla take down monsters like King Ghidorah and the MUTOs? Yes, those are certainly impressive feats for sure. But let’s be honest though, Godzilla’s arms tiny when you measure them up against Kong’s gorilla guns. One swing from them easily staggered Godzilla, so if Kong managed to keep up the momentum, Godzilla would be overwhelmed. Godzilla’s bulkier frame does allow him to possibly counter Kong with a strong rush attack. Using his weight to knock the ape down but it only works in one direction. If Kong manages to dodge the rush in time (which he very well could), it would leave Godzilla wide open.

Speed and Dexterity

Now when it comes to this factor, terrain can be the deciding factor. We know that Godzilla is clearly an amphibious creature and can easily swim and maneuver around in water. If Godzilla does manage to somehow drag Kong into the water, he could begin to wear Kong down or even drown the beast. Kong, however, will probably do everything he can to avoid this situation and it’s most likely that the fight will take place on land. In that case, Kong will definitely have an advantage over the King of the Monsters. Apes are naturally agile animals, capable of using every limb in their body to move around and to attack. As we discussed earlier, Godzilla’s chunkier size and lower center of gravity limits his movement.

Think of it this way. Imagine if a MMA fighter fought against a large sumo wrestler. The MMA fighter would obviously have an easier time landing blows and hits on the wrestler than with the other trying to pin the fighter down. When you further consider the reach of Kong’s attacks in comparison to Godzilla’s relatively smaller arms and his ability to use tools around him, there seems to be a stronger case for the ape to win. In the film “Kong: Skull Island” we see the ape use trees as bats and chained anchors as deadly whips against the Skullcrawlers. So unless Godzilla manages to level the entire landscape around him, Kong could use the environment to his advantage. Kong proves to be more agile and versatile combatant in this fight.

Special Abilities and Powers

Some of you at this point might be smashing your keyboards while yelling at the screen “Have you forgotten that Godzilla is a literal walking nuclear reactor?! He would destroy Kong in seconds!”. We have indeed considered Godzilla’s unique atomic nature. As shown in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”, the beast is capable of energy absorption and has a strong healing factor. Godzilla also has powerful offensive capabilities such as his signature Atomic-Breath and his 360° thermonuclear pulse attack that he used against Ghidorah. Those powerful pulse attacks ripped the flesh right off Ghidorah and would no doubt annihilate Kong if he was in close proximity to the lizard.

Here’s the thing though, Godzilla only managed to sustain that power after absorbing the radiation from a nuclear bomb and Mothra’s life force. If it wasn’t for these two factors, Godzilla would have never been able to reach that level of power. Which leaves him only with his Atomic Breath, which is no joke mind you. A single blast would probably tear Kong a new face-hole or severely burn the ape. After all, Kong is essentially just a big monkey with no discernible energy-based powers or abilities.

Verdict

After carefully weighing out the evidence and the facts, we’ve come to the conclusion that the winner between the two would be…Kong! Sorry Godzilla fans but your favourite giant lizard is going to need a lot of help for him to clinch a win. Maybe if you dropped a nuclear bomb on Godzilla, he’d stand a chance against Kong. Alone however and on land, Kong would dominate the battlefield. He’s been trained since his adolescence to battle multiple agile serpentine beasts at once. It’s highly likely that he’ll be able to dodge and weave around Godzilla’s Atomic Breath with his superior reflexes. In conclusion, all hail Kong, the new King of the Monsters.

So who do you think would win in a fight? Do you agree with our decision? Or do you think Godzilla could definitely kick Kong’s hairy butt? Be sure to let us know in the comments down below.
