16 Creative April Fool’s Pranks & Jokes By Local Brands

After the last year, we all need some jokes to lighten up our lives. What better way to blow off steam than on 1st April aka April Fool’s Day?

These companies have come up with interesting and mischevious ‘deals’ to delight their customers. You’ve got to hand it to them; their creativity is off the charts! So, what available on 1st April only? (Or never, in some cases):

1. Starbucks

Starbucks is turning Malaysia’s favourite food into a beverage. We’re not sure if you’ll be served a cup full of rice, sambal, anchovies, hard-boiled eggs and cucumber slices or blended ingredients. Maybe some of you will like it; majority of fans don’t though! Instagram user dilalalalaaa_ managed to summarize our thoughts on the matter perfectly with her “Satan frap?” quip.

2. The Alley

If you’re not fond of drinking nasi lemak, The Alley offers plain old nasi lemak— with a twist. Along with the usual side dishes, The Alley’s version comes with chewy pearls, brown sugar and orange slices. They are very convinced the new sides will go with sambal belacan and rice. Er, we’ll let you guys decide that! Be forewarned though, The Alley did say, “It’s April Fools day, so believe nothing.

3. MYKORI

MYKORI announced their special menu for April, nasi lemak kakigori and tempoyak kakigori. While most Malaysians love local cuisine, there are some things that should never be combined. As Instagram user aisyah_liee said, “Too scared to taste.” This spicy combination would be enough to make anyone mad!

4. Daboba

Speaking of spicy, what do you guys think of Sambal Belacan Milk Tea? We’d advise caution while drinking it; although, logically, the milk should cancel out the spiciness, right? Can’t guarantee the taste unfortunately. Shoutout to Insta user iezzathaikal65 for wanting to try it— let us know how it tastes if you do!

5. Nando’s

You know what else is spicy? Nando’s Peri Peri. It now comes as a beverage, so you can get it on the go. Don’t forget to not visit your nearest Nando’s cause it’s not available anywhere.

6. Hup Seng

For some people, crackers can be a little plain. We all like to add things to it. Well, Hup Seng is spicing things up by adding ghost peppers. If you’re brave enough to try it, hats off to you. Most of us agree with this netizen’s comment: “(Don’t) really want to die from eating cream crackers.

7. 7-Eleven

Nasi lemak isn’t the only thing Malaysians love, durian is a national favourite as well. 7-Eleven is dropping a limited edition crossover between Nilofa and Slurpee! While the combination of banana flavoured milk topped with fermented durian (tempoyak) doesn’t seem very appetizing, Instagram user justinaidan007 suggested durian slurpee instead. Gotta admit, that does sound good…

8. Yunique Tea Sibu

We’ll be honest with you, we’re not sure if this one is real or not. Noodle based bubble tea is not something anyone has dreamed of (we hope) but some fans are hoping to win the drink. Facebook netizens however are booing it down. Even if you love Sibu food, this might not be your cup of (boba) tea.

9. TigerSugar

Aside from noodle boba, we also have Stinky Toufu Boba from TigerSugar! If you love the iconic Taiwanese street-food and boba tea, this is probably a match made in heaven for you. While you’d think naysayers would be in the forefront, Instagram users are pretty eager to taste this combo.

10. Spade’s Burger

We’d like to introduce boba lovers to boba burgers. Bite down into a juicy burger seasoned with milk tea sauce and added brown sugar pearls. Most boba lovers would probably like to try this sweet and savoury delicacy.

11. Tealive

We know how hard it is for some people to not have their daily bubble tea. Well, Tealive has a limited edition Bubble Tea Face Mask that smells like bubble tea. Now you can breathe it if you aren’t drinking it.  However, we agree with Insta user nurhabibahabdulhalim who advised us not to wear it during puasa. “You’ll be hungry later,” she wrote.

12. FamilyMart

Source: Instagram

Speaking of smells, ever wandered past FamilyMart and smelled their oden? Well, now you can smell like their oden with this perfume. Not sure if it’s Tom Yam or Curry oden though. FamilyMart guarantees the smell will last for at least a week!

13. MyBurgerLab

myBurgerLab decided to help you spice things up in the bedroom. As they are famous for meats, buns and sauces, they’ve selected 3 classic flavours for their new Sausage Wrappers to “blow your mind away“. Instagram user crabbicalamari commented, “Don’t you guys do this for real one day,” and received the cheeky reply “You know you’re curious.

14. Subway

There’s nothing better than washing your face to make you feel fresh. Sadly, Subway’s Daily Face Wash is nonexistent. You can still get that freshness both inside and out with their Daily Fave promo however! Be honest though, you’d really like to try this, if only to see how it would feel.

15. MyNews

Source: Facebook

MyNews jumped aboard the funny train and introduced their Chigiri toothpaste. What better way to keep your mouth fresh than with delicious toothpaste? If this was real, we’d probably end up eating more toothpaste than we should.

16. Sushi YA

If you don’t like chocolate flavoured toothpaste, Sushi Ya would like to suggest other flavours like Teriyaki, Mentai and Wasabi. It’s guaranteed to shock you awake in the morning, at least.

While these companies were joking around, some of these ideas definitely caught people’s interest. Which idea would you like to come true? Also, you should definitely check out Mothership’s video on the top 10 April fool’s pranks this year and share which one you liked best.
