Massive Tortoise Named Bon-Chan Pleases Passersby In His Daily Walk

A Japanese funeral director named Hisao Mitani owns an enormous pet tortoise named Bon-chan. Every evening, he takes the giant to walks in Monja Street of Chuo district in Tokyo, Japan, bringing joy to the passers-by. The massive tortoise was born 0n 1996.

Hisao has purchased Bon-chan from a pet shop in Tokyo, 25 years ago. He had never had children, so he bought Bon-chan to take the place of a child. He states that from the moment his wife laid her eyes on Bon-chan, he couldn’t leave the store without it. Mitani became Bon-chan’s owner during the O-Bon holidays. This is the time period when Japan pays respect to their ancestors.

Chuo magazine states that when little children gather around Bon-chan, Hisao would ask them ‘Would you like to ride on him?’, and the happy kids would say yes.

Bon-chan was only 5 cm in diameter when Hisao first bought it. But now, he measures 75 cm in diameter and weighs a whopping 100 kg. Hisao states that he had no idea that Bon-chan would grow this much. Also, Hisao revealed that the giant tortoise has never been ill.

Being the owner of Bon-chan for 25 years, Hisao has developed a close bond with Bon-chan. He says that Bon-chan is his only family member that listens to him and that he always comes over when Hisao calls his name. Hisao also revealed that if Bon-chan could take, he would be in trouble because Bon-chan knows all of his ‘dirty secrets’.

Hisao and Bon-chan take daily walks in Chuo district, where he works as a funeral director. Bon-chan owns many adorable headpieces too, like kabuto. This endearing animal surely brings immense happiness to passersby during his walks, and we hope that Bon-chan will be in good health for a long time.
