Several news outlets reported today (Wednesday, 16th June) that civil servants are now instructed to utilise Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s legal name in government documents from now onwards.
Perhaps unbeknownst to a few members of the public, Muhyiddin’s official name (real name) as stated on his identification card is revealed to be Mahiaddin Md Yasin.
The official memo dated 3rd June 2021, which was signed by the PM’s principal private secretary Marzuki Mohamad, was addressed to all officers and staff of the Prime Minister’s Office. According to the memo, which has since went viral all across social media platforms, the decision was made following the views of the Attorney General Chambers of Malaysia.
“In this regard, all correspondence and official government documents that require the use and signature in the name of the Prime Minister must use the official name of the Prime Minister as above. This directive is effective immediately,” the memo reads. Marzuki himself already confirmed the news to Malaysiakini.
Earlier on 2nd April, the news portal reported that the Shah Alam High Court revoked a preventive detention order signed by Muhyiddin during his time as the Minister of Home Affairs for not using the name printed on his MyKad.
However, it was noted that he did utilise his real name “Mahiaddin” in all four emergency proclamations.
