Society has constantly undergone massive evolution, but that doesn’t mean this is the end. Although slavery is almost non-existent and women can vote in the present, still there are many things that require improvement. The divide among people is still a major taboo, and this issue requires modern solutions.
At the moment, the internet is all about a ‘portal’ that opened in Vilnius and Lublin, two European cities. This portal was built with the purpose of bringing people from both countries together. In addition to having a very meaningful meaning, the ‘portal’ looks really cool and futuristic.

The circular shape of the portal symbolizes the wheel of time. This remarkable virtual bridge is the first of its kind, established in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, and Lublin, one of the oldest cities in Poland. The two cities go a long way back in history. On July 1st, 1569, the Union of Lublin between Poland and Lithuania was signed here. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth which is a single state was created by this Union.
Serving the idea of unity, the screens and cameras in these portals have the ability to broadcast the other city live. The on-screen view resembles what astronauts see when they look down at the Earth, called the ‘overview effect’.

Currently, the portal is silent, because technical difficulties may arise when having sound 24/7. However, sounds will be done for special events. Despite the unavailability of sound, people have found various ways to communicate, like waving, sending kisses, and taking selfies. The PORTAL team explained that with such a physical measure, the inner psychological barriers of people seem to disappear. They tend to get actively involved in action in front of the portal in a very enthusiastic and friendly manner. The team has noted that most people don’t need to be encouraged, and they approach the portal out of curiosity. The reason for this might be the fact that people are craving human connection during this pandemic.

According to Benediktas Gylys, the man behind the idea, most of the deadly challenges faced by humanity stems from a lack of understanding of others and the world. Therefore, PORTAL hopes to spread the message of unity among people and help them overcome the division that was created by humans themselves.
As any outstanding project would, PORTAL also had its fair share of challenges. Drafting a design for PORTAL was quite a challenge for the team, as the design should be minimal. Also, all the complex electronic devices should be able to fit inside. Preventing vandalism and negative environmental were also important aspects that were considered. After lots of testing, it was decided to use concrete, stainless steel, and tempered glass to build these 11 tons 3-meter wide twin Portals.

Materialization of this idea was possible thanks to the people at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University Creativity & Innovation Centre “LinkMenų fabrikas”, who worked hard to make this a reality.
Vilnius will be connected to Lublin till August. The city will change after that. Although the connection time of the cities will be limited, the project is limitless. The PORTAL team states: “the project will last until the destruction of the planet or the end of the problems that cause the divide between people.”
