In August 2017, over 200 Americans watched the solar eclipse. However, we can surely say that the best view of it was captured by photographer Jon Carmichael. He prepared for years in order to capture the solar eclipse in a special and unique manner. Eventually, he succeeded in combining his passions which are photography, astronomy, and flight to capture an incredible image of the solar eclipse.
In an interview with My Modern Met, Carmichael stated that he wanted to see the moon’s shadow move across the Earth’s surface at 2,000 mph. His goal was to capture this mesmerizing moment from a truly unique perspective, from his own country. No other moment in history was photographed as much as this solar eclipse. Therefore, as a professional in the field, he underwent lots of pressure.

To plan the perfect shot, Carmichael carefully studied the path of the eclipse. He eventually found out that a flight from Southwest Airlines, which runs from Portland to St. Louis will put him in the perfect position to capture the rare event.
The crew at Southwest Airlines was also super helpful to Carmichael. When they learned about Carmichael’s mission, they ensured that he will get a window seat during the flight. However, they didn’t stop there. The captain even took the trouble of going outside and cleaning the window, so that Carmichael will be able to get a crystal clear shot. During the flight, the pilots went a few times in circles, so that all the passengers will get a chance to witness the spectacular view.

When the right time came, Carmichael took over 1200 photos within 2 minutes, perfectly capturing the solar eclipse over the Snake River. Inc. calls this image “history’s most amazing photo.” A 10-foot laser-crystal c-print of 108 is currently displayed in New York offices.
