Incredible Photograph Captures a Caiman Wearing a Crown of Butterflies

To capture a perfect photograph, be it humans, animals, or nature, the most important thing is to be at the right place at the right time. However, many people tend to underrate the effort behind this timing. Many photographers have to patiently wait for days, weeks, months, and even years to capture these perfect moments.

Mark Cowan, a photographer who’s exploring the Amazon, recently got to capture an incredible moment in the animal world. While traveling the Amazon, Mark studies reptile and amphibian diversity. His studies are conducted along with the Herpetology Division at the University of Michigan. During his research activities, Cowan took the chance to capture a truly phenomenal photo that is both visually pleasing and educational.

Caiman is butterflies

The incredible image portrays a caiman, who’s lounging with a group of vibrant butterflies around its head. Looking from a biological perspective, the pretty little colorful creatures need salt to survive. Such minerals which are essential requirements of the butterflies are abundant in the water that gathers in caiman’s skin. For the purpose of receiving such vital nutrients, so many other animals rely on commensalism as well. The caiman doesn’t receive any nutritional advantages from this relationship. However, he doesn’t seem to mind the attention given by the butterflies.

At the 2016 Royal Society Publishing Photography Competition, Cowan’s Butterflies and Caiman received a Special Commendation in the category of Ecology and Environmental Science. If you look closely, you will notice a unique organization among the butterflies. There are three butterfly species present around the caiman, and they are clinging to their own kind. Isn’t that interesting? So, check out this incredible and share your thoughts with us in the comments.
