DC Comic’s Robin Comes Out As Bisexual In New Batman Installment

Comics as of late have been increasingly supportive of the LGBTQ community. After Marvel unveiled its first superhero gay character, it is now DC’s turn to introduce their queer hero. The long speculated debate over the sexuality of Batman’s sidekick, Robin, has finally been answered as he comes out as bisexual in the upcoming DC comic.

The latest instalment of “Batman: Urban Legends” has revealed that the Caped Crusader’s longtime sidekick Robin, specifically the Tim Drake version of him to be bisexual thereby confirming Robin’s LGBTQ status, Entertainment Weekly reported. The narrative was confirmed by writer Meghan Fitzmartin, artist Belén Ortega, colorist Alejandro Sánchez and letterer Pat Brrosseau at the end of part 3 of the “Sum of Our Parts” story.

Robin or Tim’s bisexual narrative unfolds when Robin had what is described as “a lightbulb moment” while fighting side-by-side his old friend Bernard Dowd in a streetside brawl. After Tim ultimately rescues Bernard as Robin, he then drops by Bernard’s house to pay him a visit.

At Bernard’s door, Tim can be seen psyching himself up to greet his friend and stammers, “I’m really glad you got home okay. I was relieved. And I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, about that night. And I — I don’t know what it meant to me. Not yet. But I’d like to figure it out.

Bernard responds by asking him out on a date which the DC hero character then accepts, concluding the episode until the next instalment in December. Fans have long speculated about Robin’s sexuality, albeit his history of dating women in previous iterations. DC fans seem thrilled and quite ecstatic with this DC plot twist as one reader wrote, “Crazy thing, I saw Tim Drake coming out, years ago… congrats to DC for making it a reality.

My goal in writing has been and will always be to show just how much God loves you,” writer Fitzmartin tweeted. She added, “You are so incredibly loved and important and seen. Forever grateful to be trusted with Tim Drake and his story and honored to work with the amazingly talented Ortega and Sánchez.” Ortega also tweeted on Tuesday (10th August) captioning her tweet with a rainbow flag emoji after the issue dropped.

Tim’s Robin is now officially added to the list of other canonized LGBTQ superheroes alongside Marvel’s Aaron Fischer (Captain America), Kate Kane (Batwoman), Bobby Drake (Iceman), Loki, Hulkling, Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar), Billy Kaplan (Wiccan), Midnighter and Apollo.
