Looking at various interactions among animals is always interesting and amusing. This adorable baby hippo kept braying to be rescued when he was surrounded by birds. A flock of birds landed on the baby hippo’s back and attempted to get a free ride. Being trouble and irritated by the unexpected visitors, the poor hippo kept turning his body from side to side while screaming. He was trying his best to shake off the unwanted visitors on his back.

The feathered visitors that approached him were oxpeckers. Hippos generally have a mutually exclusive relationship with oxpeckers. This is why the hippo being irritated by the oxpeckers was very unusual. The birds eat the ticks and other parasites on the hippos’ bodies. When the oxpeckers started to peck on his back, the hippo screamed out to his mother. The incident took place in the Zambia national park. The birds had no intention of leaving. But the hippo ran for the water, trying to scare off the birds.

The photographs were taken by Mark Mol. He states that he loves the expression on the little hippo as he desperately tried to get rid of the oxpeckers. The calf was very shocked by the arrival of the birds and he started running towards the waters in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Mark Mok, aged 56, was crouched low in a river, focused on a pod of hippos, when he noticed the baby hippo running towards him.
