Calvin Nicholls is an artist who skillfully crafts incredible relief sculptures by manipulating ordinary sheets of paper. For his creations, he utilizes standard carving tools. He mostly derives inspiration for his creations from the diversity of wildlife. Using his outstanding skills, he very precisely replicates external features of animals such as fins, fur, and features in a truly masterful manner. Nicholls states that his works represent the unique challenges and rewards of the animals by using paper as a medium. He further explained that during his time in an art school, he has explored grain direction, structural limits, scoring, and folding, etc. This made him realize the amazing latent properties hidden in simple sheets of paper.
As a result, since then, Nicholls used his creative practices to create extensively detailed paper art. After he transforms paper into an unbelievably detailed artwork, it’s hard to even notice that the material used is paper. Explaining his approach to his work, Nicholls states that he first dissects that plane of the subject carefully. After that, he establishes the basic form of the subject by drawing and constructing patterns. Nicholls is very attentive towards the way light interacts with paper, as it’s essential to create the illusion of three-dimension. The paper he utilizes for his creations is of archival quality. Its quality changes depending on the task, as different scoring and embossing techniques require papers of different thicknesses and finishes.
