Most of us think life ends when we pass away. However, there is a Chinese custom known as “ghost marriage” that allows for marriage after someone has passed. Unfortunately, some have seen this custom as a way of making money.
Chinese influencer Luo Little Cat (罗小猫猫子) passed away in October this year after she was pressured into drinking pesticide on a live stream. Sadly, even in death the influencer has no rest. Her ashes were recently offered up as a potential spouse in a “ghost marriage”.

Although “ghost marriages” are usually done with the consent of the deceased’s family, others view it as a lucrative business. There have even been cases of female corpses being stolen in order to sell them off as spouses. According to sources, a successful “ghost marriage” can earn between 50,000 to 70,000 yuan (~ RM33,000 to RM46,000).
Police have since detained three suspects involved in auctioning off Luo’s ashes. Two of the arrested suspects are from the funeral home in Wenshang. The funeral practitioners, Zhang and Lei were responsible for finding buyers and transporting the ashes. The duo would apparently replace the ashes after the bodies were cremated. Thankfully, Zhang’s wife reported that Luo’s match had failed and the late influencer was still “unmarried”.

As aforementioned, Luo passed away on 15th October after she drank pesticide during a live stream. According to her friends, the influencer’s stream had been a bid to get her ex’s attention. However, the stream ended tragically when Luo’s viewers pressured her into drinking the pesticide.
The influencer herself had admitted previously that she was struggling with depression. Yet, Luo’s friends claim she had no intention of committing suicide that night as she had called both the police and an ambulance after the stream.

Greed truly knows no bounds. Although the influencer left this world young, it’s sad that she is still being used after her death for others’ gains. We hope she finds peace in the afterlife.
