Coral reefs are among the world’s most striking and wonderful natural ecosystems. They not only add beauty to nature but also provide a safe habitat for many living creatures. Unfortunately, due to climate change which is resulted from the callous actions of humans, corals are getting destroyed fast. When corals face the stress of changing environments and global warming, they undergo a process called “coral bleaching”. This turns the colorful corals to white. In his series titled Ghost Coral and Coral Garden, Artist Rogan Brown expresses this sad state using cut paper as his medium. In both works, we can see layers of coral shapes crafted intricately using paper. While parts of the corals are still vibrant and colorful, the rest has turned white, conveying the dangers faced by corals. The circular composition of his works shows how bleaching is gradually closing in on the healthy coral.
Corals have inspired Brown’s artistry for a long time. He states that the breathtaking diversity and the heavily-detailed nature of such organic forms greatly inspire how he designs and creates his own sculptures. Therefore, he feels extremely sad at how these incredible ecosystems are being destroyed by the actions of humans. Through Ghost Coral, Brown hopes to viscerally communicate the destruction taking place through his artworks, wanting it to be an “accessible visual metaphor”.
Along with Ghost Coral that puts forward an alarming and heartbreaking message, Brown has not forgotten to celebrate what marine biologists do to resuscitate coral reefs. Coral Garden highlights these efforts. So, check out his amazing works and share your thoughts with us in the comments!
