Guno Park is an artist and a professor who is famous for extremely intricate and expressive ballpoint pen drawings. Most of the time, he derives inspiration from real-life subjects such as people and sightings of New York City for his artworks. In addition to these, he even explores deeper concepts through his illustrations, such as life and death. A great example of such a painting is his 85 x 51.5-inch graphite drawing titled “Nature of Things”. In this absolutely breathtaking ballpoint drawing, we can plants sprouting life through a skeleton. As claimed by the artist, the way that the skeleton is intertwined with flowers, leaves, vines, etc suggests the power of nature. It also represents how the continuity of nature can never be avoided. Park also revealed that nature brings him immense comfort.
Memento mori is a tradition that is generally done using human skulls. They remind us of the impermanency of life and the permanency of death in the form of art. By skillfully combining a skeleton with plants, Park expertly brings out a contradiction between death and new life. This massive drawing is crafted out of thousands of pencil hatch marks. Using shading, Park enhances the depth and the detailed nature of his works and makes them more realistic. He stated that he has been working on Nature of Things for over a year and that the drawing process felt like a journey.
