Malaysia has always been known by other countries as a melting pot of various cultures and ethnicities. Despite the differences, we are also known as a harmonious and tolerant community towards each other.
With the differences we have in the community, that also means we have fusion cuisines and celebrate different holidays together as a Malaysian Family. However, there are still a handful of those who are quite radical with their beliefs and refuse to tolerate other ethnicities and religions.
As we are all well aware, Christmas falls on the 25th of December every year and it is one of the most joyous holidays in the country; the Christmas sales held by stores, the sparkly and beautiful Christmas lights and decorations put up everywhere around town, and not to forget, the holiday music! So, Damian Mikhail, a member of the R&B musical group, V.E., took the opportunity to post a Christmas family picture on Instagram and to wish everyone a happy Christmas.
In the picture, his kids were dressed as mini Santa Claus and elves, while he and his wife, wore Christmas hats. He captioned the innocent picture with, “Merry Christmas. With love, from The Seets. Have a wonderful celebration.” However, the holier-than-thou community will always find a way to demonise other cultures and religions. And this time around, they decided to launch their attack in Damian’s comments section.
One netizen commented “May Allah grant you his guidance, dear brother Damian. May Allah brings you back to the right (path),” and he calmly responded with, “Ameen, may we always be granted his guidance.” While another netizen, commented “(I) hope you are aware of your ignorance and repent,” to which Damian schooled him regarding the issue.
One of Damian’s statements amongst the paragraphs of debates between him and the netizen, “Brother, if you would like to talk about wickedness, try advising those who (brings the image of religion and piousness) but still believes in the practice of black magic.”
While another netizen just found the holier-than-thou community funny and decided to comment on the issue as well, “Maybe when he goes to Sabah, he might want to ‘Ruqyah’ everyone in Sabah. Thank God, (I’m) blessed to be born in Sabah. We’re not too ignorant to differentiate between beliefs, practices, and the cultures of others. I am Muslim but we are also Malaysian.”
If you think about it, it indeed is funny that even in 2021, there are still radicals who refuse to be tolerant and to accept the different beliefs and cultures we have in Malaysia. May we all strive for a better Malaysian Family and a more tolerant society in 2022.
