Artist Transforms Pebbles Into Animals You Can Hold in the Palm of Your Hand

If you’ve ever wished you could hold a cute animal in your hands but you end up getting scared or scaring them off, then  Akie Nakata  (also known as Akie) is there to solve that problem!

Akie Nakata

Akie chose stones based on their natural shapes, which she believes already have a story to tell. The self-taught artist has had a lifelong fascination with stone collecting since she was a child.
In 2011, while strolling along a riverbank, she came across a rock that reminded her of a rabbit and decided to start painting on stones. That became a major turning point in her life.
After securing the animal-shaped stones, Akie spends a lot of time thinking about each character.

It’s All In The Eyes

Then She meticulously applies acrylic paint to the stone’s surfaces. It’s no surprise that Akie’s stone animals are so lifelike. Because she puts so much effort and care into the stone, it is as if she is taking care of the animal that is depicted.
She has painted a lot of animals, starting from cats and dogs to mice and even an entire opossum family.
Akie considers her work complete when she sees, the eyes of her painting start talking. And when the eyes bring life to the stone, she knows it’s completed.

An Art’s Tale

The artist believes that each stone has a story to tell and decides to bring that tale to life through her paintings.
She reveals, “Sometimes I paint while I talk to the stone as I hold it in my hand.”
Akie hopes that the people who possess her stone animals will value them as highly as she values her own life.
If you’re lucky, you might be able to buy one of her works when she posts them on Facebook.
