Malaysia’s very own Prince of Reggaeton, Andi Bernadee, has finally made his long-awaited return to the music scene with his new single, titled “Du”! This marked his comeback in over a year following his last song “Kais Pagi Kais Petang”.
Born in the city of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, the 30-year-old gained nationwide fame following his stint in the first season of the singing reality show “Big Stage”. From there, he continued to release a string of hit singles, including “Satu Peluang”, “Donde”, “Penat”, and “Shimmy” (among others). He’s also appeared in local TV dramas such as “Melastik Hatimu” and “Perisik Cinta Tak Diundang”.
For those who are curious, “Du” was written and composed completely by a long-time collaborator of Andi; Alyph (Magic Potions). The title “Du” is a derivative from the Malay word “rin-Du” (which means missing you). As the title suggested, the song is about missing a significant other. “We wanted to use ‘Du Du Du’ as the title, but that was already taken. So to avoid any confusion, we decided to go with just ‘Du’,” Andi shared.
Apart from his chart-topping hits, Andi is also synonymous with his thought-provoking music videos. In talking about the concept of the song’s MV, the singer told us, “I love breaking boundaries and stepping out of the box with my MVs. The overall theme of the song’s music video is very futuristic. It’s like we’re being transported from one world to another. The concept is simply ‘missing someone’. But who am I missing? You need to watch it to find out.”
During our exclusive chat with Andi (full name Andi Azrul Andi Mapangile), he also revealed his favourite parts in the song. “I have two. The first one is the ‘Du-du-du-du’ part that follows the chorus (Alyph also served as a backup vocalist for this part). After I received the demo, the aforementioned part was immediately stuck in my head. The second one would be the part where I sing, ‘Bagaimana kalau ku rindu?’ (the early part of the chorus).”
If you recall, Andi sparked an absolute delirium after he shared a video of him with GOT7’s BamBam on the set of the variety show “Master’s In The House Malaysia”. At the time of writing, the video has amassed up to 4.7 million views on his IG! In speaking about his experience of meeting and working closely with the famed idol, he said, “Me and the rest of the cast members were shaking to be honest. He’s not just an artiste, but he’s a superstar.”
He continued, “But the way he treated all of us was just amazing! We didn’t feel left out. All of us had our meal at the same table, and we hung out together. He was there with us the whole time. On top of that, he also shared a lot about his experience as an idol with us.”
So what did he learn from his short but sweet meet-up with the “Just Right” hit-maker? According to Andi, “When he appeared as one of the Masters in the show, I learnt that he had left his home country to pursue his dream as a singer in Korea. He’s from Thailand, and he travelled to another country and began his training to become a K-pop idol.”
“He also opened up to us about a lot about the challenges and setbacks he encountered. I felt the connection with him because I also left my hometown to chase my dream as a singer. I’m not originally from West Malaysia, I’m from Sabah. So I understand the change in the atmosphere that he had gone through,” the singer added during the interview session.
Ahead of the release of the music video on 20th March (Sunday), Andi will be hosting a special 24-hour livestream on his official YouTube channel. The live broadcast is scheduled to begin tonight (Saturday, 19th March) at 9pm. “You guys want to challenge me? My life in the next 24 hours will be decided by you,” he captioned his IG post.
