Grammys 2022: 9 Artists Win Their First Ever Grammy Awards

The Grammy Award is back! Songwriters, producers, composers and performers all gathered to not only celebrate music but to show appreciation to those who have worked hard to leave their mark in the music industry.

We got to see some new faces taking the stage for the first time performing one of their biggest hits like first time nominees Olivia Rodrigo and BTS. Tonight isn’t just about the fancy outfits and awesome performances, one of the highlights of this award show is seeing the nominees winning their first Grammy.

Here are 9 amazingly talented artists winning their first ever Grammy awards:

Olivia Rodrigo

  • Awards won: 3
  • Categories: Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album
  • Fun fact: Olivia Rodrigo was nominated for 7 categories for the Grammys including Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. She won 3 in total.
  • Acceptance speech: “Thank you to the Recording Academy. This is my biggest dream come true! Thank you to everyone at Interscope (Records)!”
  • Acceptance speech #2: “I wanna dedicate this award to my parents. I told my mom that I’m gonna win a Grammy, she was very supportive. I wanna thank my mom and dad for being proud of me for winning a Grammy. This is for you guys and it’s because of you guys.”

Doja Cat and SZA

  • Awards won: 1
  • Categories: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
  • Fun fact: Doja Cat and SZA are both first time Grammy nominees and now first time winners as the pair won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Kiss Me More”.
  • Funny moment: Doja was actually rushing from the bathroom to the stage when she and SZA were announced as the winners.
  • Acceptance speech: [Doja] “I have never taken such a fast piss in my whole life. Thank you everybody!”. [SZA] “Thank you Doja, thank you to my mamma, thank you to God and thank you to all of y’all. I’m glad you made it back in time!”

Jazmine Sullivan

  • Awards won: 2
  • Categories: Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance
  • Fun fact: Jazmine Sullivan has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards since 2009 and tonight she has won her first 2 Grammys for Best R&B album and Best R&B Performance for “Heaux Tales” and “Pick Up Your Feelings” respectively.
  • Acceptance speech: “I don’t know what I heard but I almost didn’t believe it. I’m so grateful to be up here. I wrote this project to deal with my own shame and unforgiveness around the decisions I’ve made in my 20s. What ended being was a safe space for black women to tell their stories. Shoutout to black women who are just living their lives. Thank you to everybody who helped me”.

Rüfüs Du Sol

  • Awards won: 1
  • Categories: Best Dance/Electronic Recording
  • Fun fact: The group were first time nominees last year for 2 awards for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance/Electronic Recording and tonight they won their first ever Grammy for their song “Alive”.
  • Acceptance speech: [Jon] “Thank you so much! I’m so proud of these guys and us and the journey we had together. Thank you to the Warner Music team!”

Black Coffee

  • Awards won: 1
  • Categories: Best Dance/Electronic Music Album
  • Fun fact: This is Black Coffee’s first time being nominated for a Grammy and first time winning the award in the Best Dance/Electronic Music Album category. This also makes him the first South African producer to be nominated and win in this category.
  • Acceptance speech: “Wow. I don’t even know what to say. I wanna thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world and heal some souls. I wanna thank my team, I wanna thank everyone on the album, I wanna thank my family and children!”

Baby Keem featuring Kendrick Lamar

  • Awards won: 1
  • Categories: Best Rap Performance
  • Fun fact: Baby Keem is one of many first time nominees winning their first Grammys for this year’s award show. Nominated for 3 other Grammys including Best New Artist, Best Rap Song and Album of  the Year.
  • Acceptance speech: “Nothing can prepare me for this moment tonight. I just wanna say thank you to my support system, the city of Las Vegas, my family, the women that raised me. My team that helped shaped everything that we got going on behind the scenes. Just thank you everybody and this is the dream!”

Andra Day

  • Awards won: 1
  • Categories: Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media
  • Fun fact: Singer-songwriter Andra Day has been nominated for 2 Grammys back in 2016 and tonight she won her very first Grammy for her work in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”.

Bo Burnham

  • Awards won: 1
  • Categories: Best Song Written For Visual Media
  • Fun fact: Started on YouTube in 2006, Bo Burnham has made a name for himself in both music and comedy over the years. Nominated for 2 Grammy awards for the first time this year and won for his song “All Eyes On Me”
