For the last two years, people across the world faced so many hardships and lifestyle changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There’s no doubt that all the lockdowns had an effect on the interpersonal relationships between people. However, despite everything, people still managed to communicate and care for each other as much as they can. This is the sentiment that’s reflected in the winning photograph at the 19th annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest. This timely photo by Sinsee Ho, titled “Lockdown but Not Disconnected” won the contest, beating a total of 47,000 entries and 59 finalist images. Excluding the grand prize, winners were chosen under six categories, namely Natural World, People, Travel, American Experience, Altered Images, and Mobile.
Sinsee Ho’s incredible image was last year, during the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in Malaysia. This is a time where people usually get together. However, circumstances were different due to the pandemic. Therefore, through her entry, Ho wanted to showcase how much the world has changed. The photograph features Ho and her husband, and it’s taken using a tripod and a 10-second self-timer.
In addition to these six categories, the Reader’s Choice award was given to Shayna Stevens, who hained over 13,000 votes. Her photo, which is taken in her own backyard, is truly charming and heartwarming. It features her husband showing a can full of fresh milk to her 2-year-old son.
