For some working individuals, a portion of their income goes to family – typically parents or younger siblings. However, some cannot hide their disappointment when their hard-earned salary has to go to treating someone else – like this man with his family.
Twitter user @/ayspaces recently shared an image of a McDonald’s receipt totalling RM230. With the photo, the man tweeted, “Basic salary (of) 1500. The family requested to treat the family to something yummy. I’m the oldest. (My) 10 younger siblings are still in school. (Just the) First day, roughly 15% of my salary was gone. Yet to add in the allowance that my girlfriend asks. Barely half a month in, I already have to starve myself. I’m sure there are many like me.”
The tweet had many sympathising with the man’s situation but also sparked a debate on working adults having to give allowances to their parents or treat their families despite not earning much. One comment said that giving to parents is a noble act, but the parents should still understand the person’s commitments, especially if they’re the oldest. Some were on the opposite side of the fence, saying the man might regret not providing more for his family once they’re gone.
However, some comments pointed out the man’s commitment to his girlfriend and providing an allowance for her. Some said providing for his girlfriend is unnecessary since they’re not married yet. Others say she should’ve been more understanding of his financial situation and not asked for money from her boyfriend. Some also think the allowance given to her is better saved for the future if he wishes to marry her.
