If you haven’t heard, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) will be appointed the tourism ambassador for Melaka. While the appointment has brought criticism from local netizens, the state government is doubling down on their choice as they continue preparing for the star’s visit later this month.

According to reports, the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) has begun work on a mural of the star’s portrait. The image used as a reference is a still from Fan Bingbing’s 2014 drama, “The Empress of China (武媚娘传奇)”. The mural is painted on the wall of an old shop at the iconic Jonker Street and will be done by the end of the week.

In an interview with China Press, the head of the team behind the mural shared more details about the artwork and the painting process. MBMB staff Ali said the mural measures ten feet high and ten feet wide. Despite the large size, Ali said the team should be able to complete the artwork within a few days. He also said the mural should last about two years before needing a repaint.

The artist told the news outlet that this is his mural of a Chinese artist, adding that he believes the artwork will easily attract the attention of tourists. Ali also revealed that the MBMB also planned for a few more murals around the area, including one of the Visit Melaka Year 2024 logo that measures a height and width of 16 feet.

Fan Bingbing will officiate the mural with Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusof during her visit to the state next Friday (14th June). Meanwhile, the star will officially be appointed the Melaka tourism ambassador on 25th June (Tuesday). However, the state government hasn’t shared details about an appointment ceremony.
