Sofia Vergara Is First Latina To Earn Emmy Nom For Best Lead Actress In Limited Series

Sofia Vergara is making waves with her critically-acclaimed role in “Griselda”, where she portrayed the infamous female drug lord from Miami. Her lead role in the series opened doors for the “Modern Family” actress to escape the typecast roles of the “hot Latina”.

Sofia’s incredible acting has definitely paid off as she will now go down in history as the first Latin woman, born from a Latin country, to be nominated for a Emmy award for “Lead Actress in a Limited Series”. Granted, Anya Taylor-Joy, who had previously won the award for her role in “Queen’s Gambit”, was also Latin but the actress was born in Miami.

Over the timeline of her career, Sofia Vergara had only starred in movies and series where her looks were the main part of her character’s role – though we all can agree that the actress is a knockout. Known for her role in “Modern Family” as Gloria Pritchett, Sofia won the hearts of many as the fun, loving, and strong character she portrayed in the show.

However, with “Griselda”, the actress wanted to make sure she portrayed the role perfectly and show Hollywood she’s more than typecasting. In an interview with Deadline, the actress expressed that there were many things she was nervous about before the show, and stressed that it was her first time doing a show in full Spanish. “I was nervous if I was going to be able to convince people that it wasn’t just Gloria Pritchett with a plastic nose.

The actress underwent hours of prosthetics, hair and makeup, to fully achieve the look of the real drug lord, Griselda Blanco. Sofia Vergara’s dedication to the role has since made the Netflix show a hit and had the online community constantly at a craze over her talented acting. Her portrayal in “Griselda” was nothing less than perfect and we’re rooting for the Latina actress’s victory.

She is up against Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”), and Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”).
