As we all know, some countries have not yet legalise same-sex marriage and, as of May 2024, only 37 countries have given the green light, including the United States, Australia, France. While still a long way to go to achieve total legalisation, this progress has left supporters of the LGBTQ+ community feeling grateful for the change, as more people have accepted the community and celebrated their differences.

Adding to the good news is that on Tuesday (24th September 2024), Thailand’s King, King Vajiralongkorn (วชิราลงกรณ), signed the marriage equality law, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage. Rainbow flags fluttered in celebration as the Thai LGBTQ community and its allied took to the streets in a festive parade to commemorate this historic moment. Several public figures have also shared their reaction to the news, even announcing their next moves with their partners. Here’s what they said:

1. Ann Chumaporn Taengkliang

Prominent LGBTQ+ activist and politician, Ann Chumaporn Taengkliang (อรรณว์ ชุมาพร แต่งเกลี้ยง), also known as “Waaddao” (วาดดาว), celebrated the news on her Instagram account by posting a picture with her girlfriend while holding a sign asking her to marry her. She wrote, “Equal marriage has passed. 120 days from today will be 22nd January 2025. The whole country of Thailand can now register for marriage.” She added, “This is our good news and everyone’s good news. It feels so good, right?” Ann’s post went viral, and she was featured in various media outlets for her role in the movement, describing the passage of the bill as a significant step towards acceptance and equality in Thailand.

2. Tong Thanayut Thakoon-auttaya

The handsome actor and model Tong Thanayut Thakoon-auttaya (ต๋อง ธนายุทธ ฐากูรอรรถยา) has been vocal about LGBTQ+ rights and the importance of legal recognition for same-sex marriages for a long time. In his Twitter post, he expressed his happiness of the legalisation, writing, “Finally, the law has been announced in the Royal Gazette and will come into effect in another 120 days. I’m so happy! From now on, we’ll wait for the parliament to amend dozens of related laws.” He also mentioned that everyone will witness hundreds of same-sex couples getting married and registering their marriages simultaneously, hoping for political stability in the long term.

4. Emi Thasorn Klinnium

Actress Emi Thasorn Klinnium (เอมี่ ทสร กลิ่นเนียม), known for her tomboyish nature, took to Instagram to share her excitement over the recent parliamentary decision. In her Instagram story, she proudly posted an update on the votes from the parliament senate, accompanied by an article that read, “Marriage equality passed. The senate voted in agreement.” Her post radiated joy and relief as she celebrated this significant achievement for the LGBTQ+ community and the nation.

Bonus Mention: Nattapong Chinsoponsap & Kitiwhut Sawutdimilin

While celebrity couple Both Nattapong Chinsoponsap (ณัฐพงศ์ ชินโสภณทรัพย์) and Newyear Kitiwhut Sawutdimilin (กิตติวัฒน์ สวัสดิมิลินท์) didn’t directly share their reaction to the news, it’s likely they’re one of those who have been anticipating the legalisation. On 26th June 2024, the couple got engaged after the same-sex marriage bill was first approved by the Thai Senate. The couple also posted a TikTok video showing a glimpse of the proposal, capturing the heartwarming moment that followed the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Thailand.
