MYTRO: 4 Fun Facts About SM Entertainment’s Upcoming Trot Idol Group

South Korean entertainment company SM Entertainment is known for debuting some of the best boy groups in the K-pop industry, from pioneers H.O.T (에이치오티) and TVXQ (동방신기) to trendsetters EXO (엑소) and NCT (엔시티). However, the talent agency is branching out to a different crowd with their upcoming group – MYTRO (마이트로).

This soon-to-debut group may have the visuals of a K-pop idol group, but they’ll be focusing on trot music or Korean folk music. The catchy genre is popular with the older generation, akin to dangdut in Southeast Asia – but the group has captured the hearts of both the young and old since its introduction. If you want to learn more about this upcoming boy group, here are some fun facts about MYTRO:

While MYTRO is a new group, they feature some familiar faces. Most notable is SM Entertainment trainee Shohei (쇼헤이/松嶋 翔平), who will make his long-awaited debut since being introduced as an SM Rookies member in 2022. Tey (한태이), a former member of the disbanded K-pop group MR.MR (미스터미스터), also joins the group. Another member, Lim Chaepyung (임채평), is also familiar to the public, having joined the singing competition “Mister Trot 2”. The group also includes actors Seo Woohyuk (서우혁) and Jung Yoonjae (정윤재).

They’re The First Trot Idol Group Under SM Entertainment

SM Entertainment may have debuted many groups over the years – but MYTRO could easily be their first group dedicated to trot music. The genre also doesn’t have many groups because soloists are more common, so it’s safe to say that MYTRO will be one of the few trot idol groups in the industry. However, it’s worth mentioning that Super Junior has a trot subunit called Super Junior-T (슈퍼주니어-티), but the group did not debut independently.

They’ll Share Their Debut Journey On Television

MYTRO is formed through the TV Chosun reality programme, “Falling for a Trot-dol: Lovestruck Noonas”. The show will tell each member’s stories and how they came to join the group. The programme will air in October, but the broadcasting company has already uploaded an exclusive first look on their YouTube channel. Three of South Korea’s top female hosts, Lee Young Ja (이영자), Song Eun Yi (송은이) and Kim Sook (김숙), will serve as hosts, adding more fun to the show.

They’ve Started Releasing Their Idol-esque Debut Teasers

The group has already released teasers and introduction trailers in anticipation of their upcoming debut. However, staying true to their identity as an idol trot group, MYTRO’s debut teasers resemble a typical male idol group. In the photos, the members show off their good looks in casual outfits, which differs from the bold clothing that trot singers wear.

MYTRO’s debut date is still in the air, but they’re already garnering tons of attention. We can’t wait to see and hear more from this revolutionary group.
