Yakiniku Botan+ Review: What We Love About This New Japanese Restaurant In The Exchange TRX

Get ready for a sizzling culinary journey with Yakiniku Botan+, offering one of the best yakiniku experiences in town! While American barbecue often comes to mind when people think of grilling, Japanese BBQ, or yakiniku, delivers a distinct and equally thrilling flavour experience.

For those new to yakiniku, it’s a Japanese grilling style where bite-sized pieces of meat and seafood are cooked on a tabletop grill, offering a hands-on, flavorful experience. Yakiniku Botan+ brings this concept to Kuala Lumpur, blending traditional Japanese flavours with a modern Tokyo-style touch.

Our meal began with an assortment of seafood, including plump prawns, scallops, salmon, and buttered oysters. While the seafood was fresh and cooked to perfection, we couldn’t help but wish for a hint more seasoning to bring out the natural sweetness of the ingredients. A simple marinade or a dash of spice would have elevated the experience beyond just freshness.

However, when it came to the meat, Yakiniku Botan+ truly shined. The wagyu short ribs and short plates were as expected: decadent, rich, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. While the electric grill used in the restaurant may not impart the smokiness of traditional charcoal grills, the beef still delivered a luxurious flavour, especially when paired with their signature sauces. There’s something so satisfying about watching marbled wagyu sizzle before dipping it into their signature sauces designed to enhance each bite.

For sides, the seafood pancake offered a delightful combination of textures. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, filled with an abundance of seafood. The wagyu sushi, a unique take on the traditional inari sushi, was a standout dish. The tender cubes of wagyu tucked into tofu pockets created a rich and umami-packed bite, though the dish was undeniably filling.

No meal at Yakiniku Botan+ would be complete without a sweet ending. The yuzu sorbet provided a much-needed palate cleanser with its bright citrus notes, while the matcha ice cream offered a familiar sweetness akin to matcha KitKats, creamy, slightly earthy, and comforting.

If you’re looking to indulge in premium Japanese BBQ with a modern twist, Yakiniku Botan+ is the place to be. Bring your loved ones and savour every bite of their exquisite selection of seafood and meats!
