Datuk Amaluddin Mohd Ismail told reporters that all six of his luxury cars – Mercedes, Porsche, Alphard, Volvo, BMW and Honda – were damaged in the recent floods. According to reports, he underestimated how bad the situation might turn out, as floods were a common occurrence in his area, especially during the monsoon season, which explained why he didn’t bother moving his vehicles to higher ground. By the time he realised that the floodwater was rising at an alarming rate, it was already too late to save the cars.

“When I checked outside, the water was only ankle-deep, but within an hour, it surged past one metre. There was no time to salvage the cars. I could only watch as they submerged in floodwater. It broke my heart,” he said. As for the total losses, the 63-year-old could not provide an estimate, but knowing how much these cars cost – hundreds of thousands each  – we can only imagine how much he would need to spend for full repair.

The expensive cars weren’t the only things damaged; the first floor of the owner’s house was submerged in water, causing damage to many of his household items and electrical appliances. After the floodwaters subsided, the Ipoh City Hall dispatched 47 personnel to help clean public spaces using high-pressure water jets, trucks and cranes. A total of 30 people from 11 families were relocated to temporary evacuation centres, with some victims taking shelter at relatives’ houses.
