(Video) From Bella Rahim To Amy Mastura: 4 Malaysian Stars’ Cameos In Japanese & Korean Productions

Finding little easter eggs of Malaysia on the global stage is always a fun surprise for every Malaysian out there. Whether it may be the sighting of famous landmarks or mentions of the durian, it’s truly a nationwide experience to feel proud to see our country represented worldwide.

However, it’s not often we see our local celebs making a physical appearance on Japanese and Korean productions. Despite the rarity of finding Malaysian cameos in JK-dramas and films, there are still a select lucky few! Here are Malaysian stars who have played minor roles in Japanese or Korean projects:

1. Amy Mastura- The Files of Young Kindaichi: Prison School Murder Mystery

Renowned Malaysian singer and actress Amy Mastura played as an extra in the Japanese telemovie special, “The Files of Young Kindaichi: Prison School Murder Mystery. In the episode, she played a lady selling toys in front of KLCC and even had a dialogue with the main lead. In a shocking plot twist of the scene, Amy Mastura “peeled” her face off to reveal the antagonist Yoichi Takato behind the mask.

2. Bella Rahim – Peninsula

In 2020, the highly successful South Korean zombie thriller “Train to Busan” released its sequel, “Peninsula”. In the film, Malaysian actress Bella Rahim had a minor role as Major Jane, the head of the United Nations from Malaysia. In her scene, Rahim rescues Jung-seok, Min-jung, and Min-jung’s daughters as they are transported by helicopter from the sight. While it was a brief appearance, the actress did have a short dialogue.

3. DJ SP3CK – Jazzy Misfits

In a scene from the 2019 South Korean drama, “Jazzy Misfits”, Malaysian-born artist and K-pop producer, DJ SP3CK acts as an extra. More exciting for locals is that he even served a Malay dialogue in the drama! The scene depicts Sun-deok’s mother, played by Jo Minsu (조민수), banging on a neighbour’s house which she mistook as her daughter’s. The Malaysian DJ then can be seen opening the door with frustration as he says, “Pagi-pagi buat bising apa ni?”.

4. Sabrina Azhar – Girl In The Mirror

Local influencer and engineering graduate, Sabrina Azhar, made her first acting not on the Malaysian big screen, but a the Korean drama “Girl in the Mirror”. She plays a schoolgirl being bullied by her classmates for wearing a hijab as the web drama showcases the reality of high school students who don’t fit into the norm and the severity of bullying.
