Fearing for your own safety during a flight is terrifying enough, but experiencing your child having a medical emergency mid-air is every parent’s worst nightmare. Over the weekend, an AirAsia passenger named Jacyntha Florentius took to Facebook to recount a frightening experience when her baby, Tasya, turned pale and unresponsive during their flight from Guangzhou to Kuala Lumpur.
According to Jacyntha, her baby had been sleeping soundly during take-off and woke up an hour and a half later for a feed. Like any child, the baby became restless at one point and started crying. Suddenly, the one-year-old fell eerily silent, and that’s when the mother noticed her daughter’s face and lips had turned pale, and she was barely responsive.

Panicked, she immediately alerted the AirAsia cabin crew for help. The flight attendants responded quickly, providing oxygen support for the baby, who soon showed signs of improvement. “Then the cabin crew made an announcement asking if there was a doctor on board. Luckily, there was one – she was very kind and checked on Tashya right away. The crew also spoke with the pilot to ask if the altitude could be lowered slightly, and they acted swiftly,” Jacyntha added.
The pilot then informed passengers that the flight would be diverted to the nearest airport, which was Ho Chi Minh City, to get medical attention for the unwell child. During the 30-minute descent, the cabin crew continued to actively check on little Tashya, massaging her hands and feet and monitoring her vitals. “They were so caring. As soon as we landed in Ho Chi Minh, a medical team was already on standby. They boarded the plane to assess Tashya and decided we should disembark for hospital checks,” the mother explained.

An AirAsia staff member accompanied the family to the hospital to monitor the baby’s condition. Thankfully, the toddler received prompt medical treatment and underwent all necessary tests. Once the family were ready to travel, the airline arranged a complimentary flight for them to return to Kuala Lumpur. In her Facebook posts, Jacyntha expressed heartfelt gratitude by naming the pilot, AirAsia cabin crew members and on-ground staff who had assisted her during the emergency. She urged the airline to recognise and reward them for their kindness and calm, professional response to the situation.
