Paying tribute to the late Prince, Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, stated that Prince Philip helped a lot in steering the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it continues to be an institution that is indisputably vital to maintain the balance and happiness of our national life.
Ever since the beginning of his career as the Prince consort, Philip was one of the busiest members of the Royal family. Since 1952, he has completed a whopping total of 22,219 solo engagements. He also managed to write 14 books and gave 5,496 speeches during his career. However, he stepped back from royal engagements in 2017, after his retirement at the age of 96.
The Prince Suffered A Number Of Illnesses Throughout The Last Decade
Throughout the last decade, Prince Philip suffered from numerous illnesses. However, it’s believed that ill-health is not the reason for his retirement from active office. In 2011, he was unable to attend the traditional Christmas church service. The reason for this was a blocked artery, which resulted in him having to put in a stent. In 2012, he had to suffer from a couple of bladder infections. In 2013, he had to undergo exploratory surgery on his abdomen. He also used hearing aids since 2014, before retiring from active office in 2017.
On the 16th of February, Prince Philip was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London. This was done as precautionary after the prince was ‘feeling unwell’. He returned to the Windsor castle after a month. Bucking Palace told BBC that the prince was discharged after receiving treatment for an infection and a successful procedure for a pre-existing condition.
The Queen and Prince Philip got married in 1947. He renounced his own royalty to marry her after fighting in World War Two. They had four children together, namely: Charles, Prince of Wales, Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. Paying tribute to the prince, Carol Vorderman wrote: “Theirs was a love and a marriage of more than 73 years. Deepest condolences Ma’am.”
The Greater London Lieutenancy reported that the UK has entered a national mourning period, following Prince Philip’s passing. It stated that excluding the Royal Standard, all the other flags will be lowered to half-mast.
