Elderly Patient Tells Her Son, “Mommy Doesn’t Blame You For Bringing Covid Home.”

You’ve probably heard this question before, maybe even thought about your answer to it: “If today was your last day, what would you do?” Time and time again, people will say, in various ways, that they’d like to see their love ones and spend time with them just once more.

For many Covid patients, this question is no longer hypothetical. It’s reality. This medical staff shared a lady’s last words to her son as she wasn’t sure if she would make it.

Frontliner Timothy Lau was moved to share a patient’s message as a warning for others. Timothy mentioned that part of his job involved sedating and intubating Covid patients. “I always give my patients time to call their love ones, or (insist) on them calling someone. There’s always someone to speak to,” he said. This time, his patient who was an elderly woman, decided to call her son.

Her message was short but heartfelt. “Mummy (doesn’t) blame you for bringing Covid home,” she told her son. “Don’t blame yourself if mummy (doesn’t wake) up.” Alongside the story, Timothy posted a black and white picture of a tired looking medical staff. The post was tagged with #protectourelderly, both as a plea and a call to look out for our elders.

The pandemic has affected many different aspects of our lives. It has also exposed people’s priorities. It can be tiring, being trapped at home while hoping the pandemic ends soon. However, it becomes frustrating when we see others outside without a care.

No man is an island and no one survives alone. As people, we rely on our community to get through rough times. So, even if you don’t care what happens to yourself, or think you can beat the virus on your own, remember that this is no longer a ‘you’ situation. It’s about ‘us’.

If today was their last day, what do you think they would say?
