We know Covid is terrifying. We know of its horrors, we know it’s an undeniable threat. Numbers are broadcasted everyday, informing us of how many have been infected, how many cured and how many lives have been lost. But it doesn’t really click with you, not until you see past the numbers to the people they represent.
For Twitter user @ZalanZalfrecko, whose real name is Tengku Zahaslan, the death toll on 17th May means the most to him. On 17th May, there were 45 deaths due to Covid. And one of them was his father.
Zalan took to Twitter to tell his family’s story about how Covid stole his father’s life. He cited what he’d written as the “most difficult piece” he’d ever had to pen. “(I’m) sharing my pain to wake people up,” he said, explaining why he was posting something that is so personal. “Covid-19 is real, and it is much closer to you than you think.”
This is his story.
Netizens flooded the comments with condolences and well-wishes. Others emphathised with his plight, with Twitter user Sino莉莉lili saying, “Covid-19 didn’t take my dad but it robbed me of the last moment I could have spent with him. I feel your pain.” Many thanked him for sharing his personal story, while others revealed that they cried reading it.
We too send our condolences to Zalan and his family. We pray that they find peace amidst the turmoil and be able to weather the world once more as a family.
