Purse Lost During 1950s Becomes An Unpredicted Time Capsule

A custodian at the North Canton Middle School a red purse while repairing lockers. The red purse was wedged behind a detachable metal piece when it was discovered. The purse, which used to belong to a teenager in Ohio, has provided lots of insight into the lives of teenagers in Ohio in the 1950s. The purse was dusty and dirty. However, its contents were preserved very well. The owner of the purse was a teenager named Pattie Rumfola and she had lost her purse in 1957. She was a student of what was Hoover High School at that time.

The contents of the purse tell about a well-organized teenage girl that loved her family played an active role in the community. An American Junior Red Cross card, YMCA membership, ticket stubs, and photographs of her family and friends are some of the things that were found in the purse. After confirming the owner, the school tried to contact her to return the purse. North Canton Alumni Association found out that Rumfola graduated from Hoover High in 1960.

However, Rumfola has passed away in 2013 in DuBois, Pennsylvania. As claimed by her obituary, she used to work as a school teacher in Annapolis, Maryland. As a youth, she was actively involved with her community. In her adult life, she contributed to finding the Theatre Arts Guild and the Young Women’s Club in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

The purse was eventually returned to Rumfola’s five grown children. North Canton Middle School wrote on Facebook that her children held a family gathering to open the purse to have a glimpse at their mother’s teenage life. As a token of remembrance of their mom, Rumfola’s five children kept one wheat penny each.
