Photographer Captures Light Pillars That Are Absolutely Ethereal In Northern Ontario

Although the residents of Northern Ontario are used to seeing the beautiful Northern Lights, it was a new surreal experience for Timothy Joseph Elzinga, a tech YouTuber. What he saw outside his windows after his son woke him up at 1:30 am was a great surprise for him. As soon as Elzingo was about to go back to sleep, he witnessed an unusual sight outside. He was stunned by the sight of the glowing lights that were beaming from the earth! What’s even more surprising is, these shimmering lights have nothing to do with Northern Lights. In fact, they are called Light pillars. These extraterrestrial light beams are a result of the reflection of light that takes place inside ice crystals, causing atmospheric optical illusions.

For this phenomenon to occur, the temperature should drop to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 degrees Celsius. When this happens, dense clusters of ice are created, forming vessels that can reflect light perfectly. Therefore, it’s clear that what Elzinga saw were not actual columns of light, but absolutely breathtaking reflections of light. They were an optical illusion created by a collective reflection of light from surrounding houses, buildings, traffic lights, street lights, etc. In an interview with CBC, Elzinga states that what he witnessed looked like someone from Star Trek beaming people up. He explains that seeing it personally, it looked very bright and supernatural.

So, what are your thought about these striking reflections of light? Check out the pictures below and share your thoughts with us in the comments!
