Relocating animals that are held in captivity is undoubtedly a really tough task. It is truly a huge challenge and carries immense responsibility. Needless to say, relocating a couple of beluga whales to a different continent in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic doesn’t even sound possible. Regardless of all these obstacles, these adorable beluga whale duo named Little Grey and Little White were released into freedom in Iceland, as part of a relocation experiment of two years. When the two whales were very young, they were caught off the Russian coast before being sent to China. At the time they were rescued, the duo was living in the Ocean World water park in Shanghai. The place where they were relocated is the Beluga Whale Refuge, which is the first open water sanctuary in the world. The Sea Life Trust organization carried out the relocation process.
Despite the 6,000 mile trek, the whole process was carefully planned and successfully executed by the company. As a result of being relocated, these two beluga whales will enjoy the ocean water for the first time in over 10 years. Both the creatures are 12-year-olds, and they safely landed at Klettsvik Bay.
The decision to relocate the whales was taken after Merlin Entertainments, a corporation that opposed keeping creatures in captivity, purchased the aquarium. Specialized transporting utensils, loads of ice, and water to keep them wet, and veterinarians were needed for this process. During their voyage, they were kept on special slings with foam matting that are built to suit their body proportions. The crew was well=experienced as they have done similar experiments prior to this. The photos below show how happy the beluga whales were to find their freedom.
