Renowned twist master M. Night Shyamalan returns to the spotlight with a gripping new thriller, simply titled “Trap”. The writer and director behind “The Sixth Sense” has been enjoying a resurgence with several successful films in recent years, such as “Old and Knock at the Cabin“. Audiences continue to appreciate the auteur filmmaker’s work, as both “Split” and “Glass” have become surprise hits on Netflix years after their release.
“Trap” begins innocuously, with a father (Josh Hartnett) taking his daughter (Ariel Donoghue) to see her favourite musician in concert. They appear to be a typical father-daughter duo. However, the situation takes a dramatic turn when dozens of police officers surround the venue, acting on a tip that a notorious serial killer known as “The Butcher” might be among the attendees. What follows is a tense mystery filled with lies, secrets, and deceptions, with the father and daughter at the centre. Given that this is a Shyamalan film, viewers can expect several twists and surprises along the way.
Written, directed, and produced by veteran thriller filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, “Trap” showcases his distinctive screenwriting and directorial style. Shyamalan gained acclaim early in his career with critically acclaimed films like “The Sixth Sense”, “Unbreakable”, and “Signs”. When speaking to Variety, Josh Hartnett revealed that he “instantly hit it off” with Shyamalan.
“The script was just batshit crazy. I was like, ‘YES!’ The character is wonderful,” he told the publication “I can’t say anything about it, because he’ll kill me. But the characters are all wonderfully complex.”
The 46-year-old actor continued, “I used to be really interested in the effect of the character and what the character meant to me, personally. I wanted to find a specific type of character, when I had choices when I was younger. And then as I got older, I realized, actually, I want to choose things that are way outside of what I understand. I also don’t really care about what the character is as much as I care about the people that I’m working with. If it’s great people, then it’s my job to figure out what the character is.”
