The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” has been making waves with its cast announcements, including Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson as Michael, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as John Branca. Promising a “riveting and honest portrayal,” the film aims to showcase the King of the op stars’s creative genius alongside his personal struggles.

However, addressing the multiple child abuse allegations against Jackson, which he always denied, poses a significant challenge. The Jackson estate, deeply involved in the production, insists on maintaining the celebrity’s innocence, complicating the filmmakers’ efforts to provide an unbiased narrative.

2. Britney Spears (Release Date: TBA)

Our girl Britney’s story has yet to be told with how she’s been treated over her career and this biopic will definitely do the pop star justice. Universal Pictures has secured the rights to Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me” and will develop a biopic.

Produced by Marc Platt, the biopic will be directed by Jon M. Chu, known for “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights.” The pop icon’s memoir details her rise to fame from “The Mickey Mouse Club” to global pop stardom, her struggles with the conservatorship that ended in 2021, and personal revelations, including her past abortion while dating Justin Timberlake.

3. The Beatles (2027)

In case you haven’t heard, The Beatles are finally getting the biopic treatment they deserve, with four separate films detailing the lives of each member, directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes. Scheduled for a 2027 release, Sam Mendes aims to challenge traditional movie-going experiences.

Rumoured castings include Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, although Charlie Rowe has denied involvement as George Harrison. This project, the first to have full life rights and The Beatles’ musical catalogue, marks a significant moment in musical biopics, a genre recently flooded with films like Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” and the upcoming Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan features. With the proven popularity of sing-along films and interconnected franchises, The Beatles’ story is set to captivate audiences across generations.

4. Madonna (2026)

In January 2023, Madonna reportedly shelved her biopic starring Julia Garner to focus on her world tour. However, as of July 2024, the project is back on track. Madonna announced on Instagram that she’s working on a script titled “Who’s That Girl,” referencing her 1987 film and single.

The pop icon is directing the film herself, having been deeply involved in the process. Madonna explained to Jimmy Fallon in October 2021 that she decided to take control after reading several superficial scripts written by men. “The reason I’m doing it is because a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me, but they’re always men,” she said, calling previous attempts “hideous” and “superficial.”

5. Bruce Lee (Release Date: TBA)

This biopic will hit close to home, as it is being filmed in Malaysia. Martial arts and action movie enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that a Bruce Lee biopic, titled “Little Dragon,” has recently begun production in our country. The film, a contemporary dramatisation of Bruce Lee’s life in 1950s Hong Kong, will explore his journey to becoming a legendary martial arts star and modern philosopher.

Directed by Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, known for the Oscar-nominated biopics “Elizabeth” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” the project promises to delve into themes of family, friendship, and romance. The late actor’s daughter, Shannon Lee, will produce the movie under the Bruce Lee Entertainment banner alongside Convergence Entertainment. The film is currently in pre-production, with casting directors searching for an actor to portray the teenage Bruce Lee.

These biopics are set to make a significant impact at the box office, as they authentically tell the stories of these iconic stars. We can’t wait for their release!
