“It Looks Like A Shrine”: Netizens React To Ampang LRT Station’s Raya Decoration

Since the beginning of the month, Malaysians have admired beautiful Hari Raya decorations in shopping centres across the country. Some malls have been highly praised for their creativity and extravagant displays, while others haven’t quite lived up to shoppers’ expectations.

Nevertheless, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so not everyone will be impressed by what they see. Apparently, some LRT stations have also been decorated for the upcoming holiday. However, two particular decorations caught the attention of netizens—one of which left many baffled. Here’s why:

Over the weekend, Twitter user @/_AmranFans posted a photo of an odd-looking Hari Raya decoration they supposedly spotted at Ampang Park MRT station. As shown in the photo above, the setup was extremely minimal and occupied only a small area of the station. This prompted another user, @/callmefye, to share two photos of the decoration he saw at the Ampang LRT station, which he described as resembling a shrine.

The photos showed the Hari Raya display occupying a small area of the station, featuring items and props commonly associated with or used during the celebration. However, rather than being open to the public for photos, the decorated area was cordoned off with rope stanchions to prevent LRT passengers from entering.

The post quickly went viral, sparking a range of reactions from netizens online. Many were baffled by the Raya display at the station, while others agreed that it did resemble a shrine. Some found it humorous and even joked that train stations were competing in a worst Raya decorations contest. Netizens also expressed disappointment over the lack of effort, saying it was a waste of resources for something of such low quality.

We understand this may be a case of a limited budget, but we’d recommend making full use of the space to create a more lively atmosphere rather than focusing on just one small area. It’s not too late for some re-decorating, and if it is, let’s hope next year’s decorations are more impressive.
