Oscars Nominations 2022: Andrew Garfield and Kristen Stewart Scoop Nods, “The Power of the Dog” Leads the Pack

The 2022 Oscar nominees have arrived!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just revealed the 2022 Oscars nominees, celebrating the best of film in 2021. While there are certain snubs – we’re looking at you Lady Gaga – the quality unveiled here is unparalleled.

Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” is the frontrunner, scooping up a whopping 12 nominations, including Best Picture. Close behind is Denis Villeneuve’s spicy sci-fi feature, “Dune”, which earned 10 nods. Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” each got seven nominations.

There are a bunch of notable firsts here. First-time nominees include Kristen Stewart for her role as Princess Diana in “Spencer” along with Kirsten Dunst for her role in “The Power of the Dog”. Dunst’s husband, Jesse Plemons, too grabbed a nom for the same film. Furthermore, Jane Campion is the first female director to be nominated in the Best Director category more than once – her first time being for 1993’s “The Piano” where she ultimately lost out to Steven Spielberg, who is also nominated this year.

On the technical end, Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings” and”Spider-Man: No Way Home” grabbed nominations for Best Visual Effects.
